In a unique collaboration between Roastery 7, an artisan coffee roastery, and the Mindo Cloudforest Foundation, a non-profit conservation organization, the world's first carbon negative coffee was created - Tiny Footprint Coffee.
The secret behind Tiny Footprint Coffee's carbon negative status is simple: it takes 4 lbs. of CO2 to produce and distribute 1 lb. of their coffee, but for every pound sold, a portion of the proceeds is donated to fund reforestation efforts in Ecuador's Mindo Cloud Forest. Over time, these trees will remove 54 lbs. of CO2 from the atmosphere, effectively removing more CO2 than is emitted during the coffee's production and distribution.
These reforestation efforts along the northwestern Andes of Ecuador focus on planting native tree species in heavily deforested areas. The trees not only sequester massive amounts of carbon, but also provide habitat for hundreds of local bird species, reinforce soil conservation techniques, and rebuild water tables. The Mindo Cloudforest Foundation works directly with local landowners to provide jobs related to the care and redevelopment of the cloud forest.
At Tiny Footprint Coffee, the commitment to sustainability extends beyond their carbon negative operations. They source the finest, sustainably-grown Arabica coffee beans from around the world, including shade-grown, organic, and fair-trade or Rain Forest Alliance certified varieties. They also work with small, family-owned farms that are not fair-trade eligible but produce some of the most exceptional coffees.
The roasting and training process takes place at their roastery in Minneapolis, MN, where they are dedicated to making the entire operation carbon negative. This includes using fully bio-degradable coffee bags, high-efficiency lighting, fuel-efficient ribbon burners on their roaster, and composting coffee grounds to reduce waste.
Tiny Footprint Coffee offers a USDA Certified Organic, Fair Trade, and shade-grown Arabica coffee with a distinctive flavor profile. The dark roast tones feature notes of chocolate, complemented by traditional Nicaraguan flavors of bright apricot, fig, and spice. The coffee is sourced from the PRODECOOP cooperative, which uses its proceeds to improve living standards, fund medical care, education, and environmental sustainability programs for its growing membership.
Every batch of Tiny Footprint Coffee is craft roasted in their vintage 90 kilo German-built Probat drum roaster, retrofitted with modern fuel-efficient ribbon burners to ensure perfect roasting every time. The result is a delicious, sustainable coffee that not only tastes great but also helps to combat climate change through its carbon negative footprint.
